Benjamin Llewllyn Basil Pitt was born in 1924 in the sister isle of Tobago. He attended Bishop's High School and was an accomplished attorney having studied at the Inns of Court in London. He was first elected a Memeber of Parliament for Tobago West in 1961 and served as Parliamentary Secretary. Thereafter he served as Deputy Speaker of the House from 1963 - 1966. Pitt spent a large part of his career representing Tobagonians having served as the Pariliamentary Secretary for Tobago Affairs and the Minister of State for Tobago Affairs.

He was also the Member for Parliament for Tobago West and a former Deputy Speaker of the House from 1963 - 1966 in the 1st Independent Parliament. Pitt served as Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General for three years. He was also appointed High Commissioner to Canada and to Barbados. Pitt was the Minister of National Security from 1971 - 1973. He died in Canada in 1985 at the age of 61.
