Request for Access to Official Documents

The Freedom of Information Act, 1999 (FOIA) was created to extend the right of members of the public to access information in the possession of public authorities by –

(a) making available to the public information about the operations of public authorities and, in particular, ensuring that the authorisations, policies, rules and practices affecting members of the public in their dealings with public authorities are readily available to persons affected by those authorisations, policies, rules and practices; and

(b) creating a general right of access to information in documentary form in the possession of public authorities limited only by exceptions and exemptions necessary for the protection of essential public interests and the private and business affairs of persons in respect of whom information is collected and held by public authorities.

 

HOW TO APPLY:

To request access to an official document held by the Ministry of National Security, a Freedom of Information – Request for Access to Official Document(s) Form should be downloaded, filled out, signed and submitted to the Ministry of National Security. However, kindly note that documents which are already in the public domain (readily available to members of the public), are not accessible under the Act.

Permission to Operate a Protective Service Agency

As outlined in the Supplemental Police Act Chapter 15:02, persons wishing to operate a Protective Service Agency in Trinidad and Tobago, must first seek permission from the Minister of National Security to do so. To make an application to operate a Security Firm in Trinidad and Tobago, download the form Application Form to Operate as a Protective Service Agency and submit the completed form to: Protective Section, Temple Court 1, Ministry of National Security, 31-33 Abercromby Street, Port of Spain.

Certificate of Exemption

Application for a Certificate of Exemption from the Provisions of Subsection (1) of Section 7 of the Immigration Act.

This service is applicable only to persons who have been granted Resident status in Trinidad and Tobago and wish to be granted approval to be out of Trinidad and Tobago for a period of one year or more.

Registration as a Citizen

Under Section 7(1) of the Immigration Act of Trinidad and Tobago, Application for Registration as a Citizen of Trinidad and Tobago is open only to nationals of Commonwealth countries wishing to become a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago.

Re-Acquisition of Citizenship

Under Section 11(2) of the Immigration Act of Trinidad and Tobago, Re-Acquisition of Citizenship is applicable to Registered or Naturalized citizens of Trinidad and Tobago who have taken up citizenship with another country and wish to regain citizenship of Trinidad and Tobago.

This service is applicable only to Naturalized or Registered citizens of Trinidad and Tobago who wish to apply for Citizenship for their minor child born outside of Trinidad and Tobago. This service is applicable to any Citizen of Trinidad and Tobago of full age and capacity who is or is about to become a citizen of another country and for that reason wishes to renounce their Trinidad and to Tobago Citizenship.
